Topology

What survives bending, and what does not.

One line, and both shapes halved. Two shapes and the single straight cut that divides each of them into two equal areas. The direction was found by sweeping every angle and watching the imbalance change sign.

One line that halves them both

3 loops in one ring, and the number that separates them. Loops drawn in an annulus, each labelled with how many times it goes round the hole. Loops with different counts cannot be deformed into one another without leaving the ring.

A loop that cannot be pulled tight

How many colourings each knot allows. Three knots, and the number of ways their arcs can be coloured with three, five and seven colours under the crossing rule, beside the determinant computed separately from the same crossings.

Colours that count more than three

Two trees, sharing every edge between them. The cube flattened into a planar graph, with a spanning tree of its corners drawn solid and the leftover edges drawn dashed; the leftover edges join the faces into a second tree, and the two counts add to the number of edges.

Two trees, and every edge in exactly one of them

The gap at a corner of the cube. The 3 faces meeting at one corner of the cube, unfolded onto the page. They leave a gap of 90.0 degrees, and the 8 gaps come to 720 degrees in total.

Seven hundred and twenty degrees of gap

A solid where V − E + F is 0. a slab with one hole through it, drawn as a wireframe. Its 32 vertices, 64 edges and 32 faces give an alternating sum of 0 rather than 2.

The solid where the answer is not two

Three sets where a fixed point escapes, and one where it cannot. A ring turned about its centre, an open disc halved toward a point of its rim, the plane shifted sideways, and the closed disc turned and shrunk. Only the last has a point that its map leaves where it is.

Where the fixed point escapes

the Hopf link, with every crossing signed. A diagram of the Hopf link with the under-strand broken at each crossing and each crossing between two components marked with its sign, which add to twice the linking number.

Two loops and one number

The line spiralling over the circle. A circle with a helix drawn above it: the helix is the real line, and the map that sends each of its points straight down onto the circle covers the circle once per turn. Above one marked point sits a column of points, one per turn.

The same loop, unrolled

a loop that dips through and back, and the punctures of the disc. A link drawn with a shaded disc spanning the first loop, seen at an angle, with every place the second loop passes through the disc marked with the direction it was travelling in.

Zero can mean two different things

A wedge of 2 circles. Several circles all passing through one common point, each labelled with a generator, so that a loop is a word in those letters.

The subgroup that is freer than the group

the Borromean rings, with every crossing signed. A diagram of the Borromean rings with the under-strand broken at each crossing and each crossing between two components marked with its sign, which add to twice the linking number.

Linked, and no two of them are

The Klein bottle, drawn where it does not fit. A closed one-sided surface in three dimensions, drawn as a tube with a figure-eight cross-section that turns over once on the way round, with the circle where the drawing passes through itself marked.

The bottle that needs a fourth dimension

The gluing abab makes a projective plane. A polygon whose edges carry the word abab, with arrows for the direction each edge is glued and the corners coloured by which vertex they become.

A disc sewn to a Möbius band

A sphere over a projective plane, cell by cell. An icosahedron with opposite faces drawn in matching colours, beside the count of cells it has and the count the quotient by the antipodal map has — every number halved, including the Euler characteristic.

Two sheets over a one-sided surface

A frame carried round a Möbius band. A flat rectangle whose ends are about to be joined, with a pair of arrows carried along it — one along the band and one across it — and the sign of the frame at each station.

Orientation is a sign

Stage 3 of a curve that has area. A square split into 64 smaller squares by removing crosses of decreasing width, the squares joined in Hilbert order; the kept area is 63.2 per cent and its limit is 0.5931.

A curve that has area

Every ear carried to a slice of a disc. The corridor's triangulation on the left and the same triangulation of a regular 20-gon on the right, with four points and their images marked; the map is affine on each triangle and agrees on every shared edge.

Every loop is a circle in disguise

A ray through a knotted tube, crossing it 5 times. A closed surface in space — a tube round a trefoil knot — with a point, a ray from it and every crossing of the surface marked; the parity of the count says which side of the surface the point is on.

Two pieces, in every dimension

Alexander's horned sphere at stage 3. A tree of clasped pairs of horns, 7 of them, each pair's two circles passing once through the other's disc; the horns shrink geometrically and their tips converge.

A ball whose outside is not one

The same loop, seen from two places. An annulus with two marked points and a loop based at the first. Two paths join the points, differing by a full turn round the hole, and each carries the loop to a loop based at the second point.

The group a space has at a point

3 sheets, and the subgroup they name. A circle with its 3-sheeted cover drawn as a spiral above it, beside a table of the winding classes and whether each lifts to a closed loop. The ones that do are exactly the multiples of 3.

Every cover is a subgroup

Three spaces, cut into pieces. 3 panels, drawn from: a sphere split into two caps meeting along a circle, two circles joined at a point, and a square whose opposite edges are glued into a torus. Each carries the fundamental group that van Kampen's theorem computes for it.

Cutting a space to find its group

Sliding one square past another. 4 stages of a slide in which two labelled squares inside a larger one exchange positions without ever overlapping. The larger square's boundary is the base point throughout, and the exchange is what makes the composition commutative.

Why the second group commutes
