Structure — what stays true when the numbers change.

The parabola that proves |a·b| ≤ |a||b|. The squared length of a − t b plotted against t. It is a parabola opening upward whose least value is 7.118; that this is never negative is exactly the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality.

The square that cannot be negative

One subtraction clears a direction. Gram–Schmidt on two planar vectors, in 3 panels: the pair as given, the shadow of the second on the first, and the perpendicular pair that is left when the shadow is removed.

One subtraction clears a direction

The nearest point of the plane the columns span. A target vector in space, the plane spanned by two columns, the point of that plane nearest the target, and the residual joining them, which meets the plane at a right angle.

The nearest point of a flat thing

The map moved to the other side of the product. Two panels over the unit curve of the product u₁v₁ + u₂v₂. The left applies A to u and measures it against v, giving 2.328; the right applies the adjoint to v and measures it against u, giving the same number.

Moving a map across a product

Perpendicular to both, and as long as their parallelogram. The vectors (2, 0.4, 0.2) and (0.6, 1.8, 0.3), the parallelogram they span, and their cross product (−0.24, −0.48, 3.36), drawn perpendicular to both with a length of 3.403, which is the parallelogram's area.

A plane disguised as an arrow

The coefficients of (1 + x)¹² sorted by remainder mod 3. The binomial coefficients of the 12th power coloured by the remainder of their index on division by 3, beside the 3 points one plus a root of unity, whose powers averaged pick out each colour's total.

Every third coefficient

The first 60 powers of (3 + 4i)/5. The powers of (3 + 4i)/5 marked on the unit circle, each a further turn by the same angle, with the power that comes closest to returning to 1 marked.

On the circle and never home

The ball around the identity, in 3 groups. A table of the number of group elements within each distance of the identity, one row per group, with the growth type each row exhibits beside it.

How fast the ball fills

The edge that is as big as the ball

2 independent rows and 2 independent columns. An array of 3 rows and 4 columns beside its transpose, with the independent rows of each shaded, showing the same count on both.

Counted across and counted down

2 independent cycles and 3 independent cuts, on 5 edges. A small graph beside its incidence matrix, with the matrix's rank and nullity given and shown to be the number of independent cuts and the number of independent cycles.

The cycles and the cuts

Seven powers of √2 + ∛3 in a space of six. A table of the powers 1 to (√2 + ∛3)⁶ as coordinate vectors over a six-element basis, with the coefficients of the dependency among them: the minimal polynomial x⁶ − 6x⁴ − 6x³ + 12x² − 36x + 1.

Seven powers in a space of six

The integers of ℚ(√5), with ℤ[√5] inside them. Points a + bφ plotted against their conjugates for small whole a and b, with the index-two sublattice ℤ[√5] filled and the basic cells of both lattices shaded, of areas √5 and 2√5.

The integers a field contains

Every quadratic is a point. The plane of monic quadratics x² + px + q with p across and q up. The parabola q = p²/4 divides it: the region below, shaded, holds the equations with two real roots, the curve itself the ones with a repeated root, and the region above the ones with none. 5 equations are marked and labelled.

Where two roots run into each other

A quadratic in the exponent, completed. Two panels sharing an x-axis. Above, the parabola −x² + 2x with its top at x = 1 marked. Below, e raised to that parabola: a bell centred at the same x = 1, with peak height e^1, beside the faint unmoved bell e^(−x²).

One number under every bell

The powers of 4 roots, added: 1, −1, 4, −5. For k from 1 to 4, the k-th powers of the roots of a degree-4 polynomial drawn as arrows placed tip to tail. Each walk ends on the real axis at a whole number, the k-th power sum, which the coefficients determine.

Every power sum, from the coefficients alone

The roots of the derivative inside the hull of the roots. Three polynomials of degree five, each drawn as its roots with their convex hull shaded, and the four roots of its derivative marked. Every root of the derivative lies inside the hull.

The roots of the slope stay inside

Orbit times stabiliser is 8, on every row. A table of 5 things the 8 symmetries of a 4-gon can move. Each row draws every position the thing can be carried to and lists the motions that leave it where it is; the two counts multiply to 8 on every row.

Twenty-four ways to set a cube down

36 3-tuples with product e, and the 3 that no turn moves. Every ordered choice of 3 elements of the 6 symmetries of a 3-gon whose product is the identity, in cards grouped by cyclic turning. 3 cards hold a single tuple repeating one element; the other 11 hold 3 each.

Necklaces made of symmetries

Six thirtieths of a turn that add to nothing. On the left a unit circle with the roots of unity in a vanishing sum marked and coloured by origin; on the right the same unit vectors placed head to tail, returning to their start.

The sums of roots of unity that add to nothing

The three pairings of the roots of x⁴ + x + 1. Three panels each showing the same four roots of a quartic in the complex plane, joined in a different way into two pairs, with the value of the sum of the pair products beneath.

Three ways to pair four roots

Discs from the rows, and the eigenvalues inside them. The complex plane with one disc per row of a 3×3 matrix — centred on its diagonal entry, with radius the sum of the sizes of the rest of the row — and the 3 eigenvalues marked: 4.14, −5.09, −1.06.

Discs that fence in the eigenvalues

The largest value on each plane, over every direction of space. A longitude–latitude map of directions u in three dimensions, each shaded by the largest value of xᵀAx on the plane perpendicular to u. The smallest such value is the middle eigenvalue 1.829, reached at ±v₁; the largest is 3.622, reached along a great circle.

The highest point on the sphere is an eigenvalue

The free group on two generators with its middle removed: 4 pieces. The Cayley graph of the free group on two generators, with the elements within 0 steps of the identity greyed out and the remaining elements coloured by which connected piece they fall in.

What is left when the middle is taken out
